Los Angeles-based Carianne Older, better known on Instagram as Peggy Shoots Film is, as her handle suggests, a film photographer, with an authentic, raw, and cinematic style inspired by her love for movies. We had a chance to sit down with Carianne for a quick interview, here is what she had to say.

When did you first pick a camera?

I first picked up a camera at a young age. I couldn’t tell you when, but I loved being in front of the camera. Around 3 years ago, I bought my first really nice film camera and it was game over from there.

Do you have specific influences in your work?

I’m highly influenced by many films such as Fight Club, American Psycho, and anything David Lynch. I say it all the time but David Lynch’s body of work really inspired me to take my work to the next level. I have him to thank for endless inspiration when creating.

What would you say is your signature as a photographer?

I’d say my signature revolves around a disco ball. My most liked picture is of a disco ball, my whole brand sparkles like one. I just love them! Many of my friends and followers send me pics of disco balls whenever they see them out in the wild, it’s kinda become a thing. I love it!

How did you get started?

I got started when I was bored working a corporate job. My boss at the time gave me a large bonus and I took the whole check and purchased a really nice camera. I started shooting on the weekends and before I knew it, I quit that job, moved away, and made this my full time job.

What’s been the most surprising element of your job?

Honestly the fact that I can make others feel confident through my art. I love taking pictures of people who don’t necessarily model, who just want photos for themselves to have. That’s why I do this. I like to make people feel special and beautiful through photography.

Any other artistic medium you are interested to explore?

I want to get into pottery! Making things with my hands seems cool. That might be my next venture.

What gets you off - literally and figuratively?

David Lynch’s Twin Peaks red room. If you know you know what I mean.

You’re based out of LA – are there certain things in the city that has influenced you? What makes LA a special place for you?

Oh yes, LA is my favorite place to shoot. I’m highly influenced by the endless sunshine and gorgeous bodies of water I’m so lucky enough to live by. LA is special because I feel like i’m constantly living in a dream. Waking up everyday to perfect weather, the sun shining down on my skin, I feel like I’m dreaming most days. I’m very happy and content here.

Film or digital?

FILM FOREVER!

If you could choose any era to work in which would it be? Why?

Ohhhh probably the 80s. The fashion was so insane and so was the way of shooting film. It was an iconic time for sure.

Who or what would be your dream subject to shoot?

Hands down either Ariana Grande or Lady Gaga in a vintage car.

What do you consider the most overrated virtue?

When people act a certain way about their work. People who are stuck up, why be that way? No one is better, we are all equals creating art. Be humble and kind, it’s the only way to get anywhere in life.
